How to call the fire service

  • If a fire occurs, get out, stay out , dial 112/999, ask for the fire service and stay on the line until the operator tells you to hang up.

  • Phoning any other number may cause a delay and valuable time may be lost.

  • When you phone the fire service you may be asked:

  • What county are you calling from?

  • What is the phone number you are calling from? This is important just in case the line drops

  • What is the address of the emergency? Give directions if required and specify key landmarks or junctions

  • What exactly has happened?

  • Are you safe and out of danger?

  • Is everyone else safe and out of danger?

  • In rural areas, it can sometimes be helpful to send someone to meet the fire engines at a key landmark or junction

  • Try to ensure everyone in your house is capable of calling the fire service and is capable of providing an address and phone number
