Electric blanket
- Check regularly for scorch marks or visual signs of damage.
- Don’t fold but roll an electric blanket.
- Never buy or use a second hand electric blanket
- Don’t use a hot water bottle with an electric blanket
- Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions
- Never use a damaged electric blanket.
- Switch off electric blankets when going to sleep and ensure they have thermostatic controls.
Laptop and phone charging
- Batteries have been known to overheat
- If a laptop vent is blocked by flammable material (bedclothes) the heat build-up can cause fire
- Use devices on hard surfaces and don’t leave them charging overnight.
- Use genuine chargers and charge on solid surfaces (not near upholstery or flammable objects).
In general
- Keep floors clear in case you need to make an escape.
- Do not place dressing table mirrors facing sunlight, sometimes they can magnify sunlight to cause fire.
- Keep combustible items away from light bulbs or lamps.
