Conservation Conifers Tour, JFK Arboretum, New Ross Gerry O’Neill, Office of Public Works Head Guide invites you to a Conservation Conifers event at the JFK Arboretum. In 2022, JFK Arboretum have sown approximately 1,000 threatened conifer trees as part of the International Conifer Conservation Programme (ICCP) on 10 acres of ground. This is the largest ex-situ conservation area in the UK & Ireland. 22 species from around the globe are present within this plot. Over the next few years, the total amount of trees in this plot will increase to 1,300. On 21st May, Doctor Hannah Wilson from the ICCP (Royal Botanic Gardens of Edinburgh) and Doctor Darach Lupton from the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin will be on site to lead a tour through this plot of threatened conifers. Climate Change and Wexford – lessons from the past and thinking about the future Time: 7.30pm – 8.30pm Date: Tuesday, 21st May, 2024 Location: Wexford Town Library, Mallin St., Wexford, Y35 AY20 Conversation with Professor Conor Murphy, Maynooth University, on lessons from the past and thinking about the future. County Wexford native Conor Murphy works on assessing long-term observations to understand how climate is changing. He also works with climate model projections for the future to understand what the impacts of climate change may be and how we can plan to adapt to them in creating a more resilient society, economy and environment. Conor will talk about insights on climate change from Wexford including how rainfall patterns are changing, signals in our weather records, coastal erosion and sea level rise and impacts of climate change for coastal communities, farming and water supplies. Conor is director of the Irish Climate Analysis and Research UnitS (ICARUS) and of the MSc Climate Change, based in the Department of Geography, Maynooth University. He is a member of the National Climate Change Adaptation Committee. He has published papers in several leading international journals, as well as book chapters and policy reports.
